Generally speaking, sealing materials suitable for downhole harsh conditions are not easy to find. There are many factors to consider: temperature capacity, pressure, chemical compatibility with the application medium, and rapid gas decompression (RGD) or steam resistance. If one of them is mistaken, the integrity of the seal may be endangered. This is not all. You also need to balance the performance required by your application without adding unnecessary costs.

In non extreme applications, widely used elastomeric material groups include NBR, HNBR and EPDM. Moving the material level up generally provides increased chemical compatibility and temperature resistance. In particular, compounds provide specialized compounds that focus on specific challenges such as RGD, vapor resistance or low temperature performance.
