What are the different types of RTJ gaskets?
The Ring Type Joint was originally developed for high pressure/temperature applications in the petroleum industry, mainly used for drilling and completion equipment in oil fields. However, today, this product series can also be used for valves and pipework assemblies, as well as some high integrity pressure vessel joints.
There are three types of ring type joint gasket designs, the R type, RX type and BX type.
R type
These are are manufactured according to API 6A. There are two configurations: oval and Octagon, which can be interchanged on modern Octagon groove flange. Like all solid metal Ring Type Joints, including the R-type, it is recommended to replace the ring when flanged connection is disconnected.
RX type
The RX type is an adaptation of the standard R type, which is energized when the assembly is pressurised. The design of RX conforms to the same groove design as the standard R-type, making the joints interchangeable, however consideration should be given to the difference in finished make up distance. The geometry of this modified design induces a pressure energising effect when the assembly is pressurised, improving the efficiency of sealing.
BX type
The Style BX energized Ring Type Joints are designed for API 6BX flanges on pressure systems rated up to 20,000 psi. When correctly fitted, the BX gasket allows virtual face to face contact of the flange faces which means that the gasket is completely limited to the inner and outer diameters. All BX gaskets incorporate a pressure balance hole to ensure equalization of pressure which may be generated in the grooves.
