How to select the appropriate guide ring material?
The requirements of hydraulic system for reliability are increasing day by day, and the working conditions of the continuously developing high-efficiency hydraulic system become more complicated. Therefore, when selecting the most suitable material, it is very important to be familiar with the working conditions, such as working temperature and pressure, load, speed and medium. The most commonly used guide element materials are as follows:
• PTFE
• Resin / fiber reinforced phenolic
• Glass fiber reinforced nylon
Teflon
Teflon guide rings are generally used for low friction and high resistance to chemicals, heat or wear. However, PTFE is only used in applications with low surface pressure. In order to obtain the best wear resistance, PTFE materials provide a variety of different fillers, such as bronze or carbon powder. The performance characteristics of PTFE guide ring are as follows:
• Good chemical resistance
• Wide operating temperature range
• Low friction
• Anti sticking and low starting friction
• Good wear resistance
• Reduce vibration
• Protect seals from particles
• Protect components from diesel effect
• Provide turning guide rings with strict tolerance requirements
Resin / fiber reinforced phenolic
The structural characteristics of the phenolic resin guide ring and the ability of the fiber fabric to absorb lubricating oil make the phenolic resin guide ring almost self-lubricating. However, phenolic resin guide rings shall not be used for high-speed operating conditions exceeding 0,5 m/s (1.6 ft/s). Phenolic resin guide ring is suitable for medium load and heavy load applications, and its performance characteristics are as follows:
• Wide operating temperature range
• Abrasion resistance
• Reduce vibration
• Protect seals from particles
• Protect parts from diesel effect
• Low thermal expansion
• Easy to install
• Tighter tolerances
• Can withstand heavy eccentric load
Nylon
Glass filled Nylon guide ring is suitable for medium load and heavy load applications. Its performance characteristics are as follows:
• Wide operating temperature range
• Abrasion resistance
• Reduce vibration
• Protect seals from particles
• Protect parts from diesel effect
• Easy to install
• Tighter tolerances
• Can withstand heavy eccentric load
• Withstand high cycle speeds
• Easy to absorb water and expand before installation
